ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

THE ATLANTIC CLASSICAL ORCHESTRA.
performs four concerts per season at The Waxlax Center for the Performing Arts at St. Edward’s Upper School campus in Vero Beach. The organization fosters performance opportunities, music appreciation and educational services for young people and provides high quality performances of classical orchestral music played by professional musicians from Florida. 772.460.0850

THE INDIAN RIVER SYMPHONIC ASSOCIATION presents performances by the Brevard Symphony Orchestra, and four different visiting national and international symphonic orchestras. The Association also hosts a free annual concert performed by the Brevard Symphony Orchestra for all the fifth grade students in Indian River County. RIVERSIDE THEATRE, is a professional, not-for-profit theatre with one of the largest subscribing audiences in Florida. Riverside Theatre is an accredited professional theatre company and is a designated Cultural Institution of the State of Florida. The Anne Morton Theatre houses the Riverside Children’s Theatre productions. THE TREASURE COAST JAZZ SOCIETY, an affiliate of the Vero Beach Museum of Art Artists include a variety of styles and instrumentation, generally featuring mainstream jazz as represented by the music of the great songwriters as welt as many jazz classics and originals. 772.234.4600

THE VERO BEACH CHORAL SOCIETY presents choral works ranging from great choral masterpieces to pop concerts. VBCS strives for excellence in performing classical and contemporary choral music for the cultural enrichment and enjoyment of the entire community. THE TREASURE COAST CHORALE, the “Sister Group” of the Vero Beach Choral Society, is directed by Michael Carter and performs concerts 3 or 4 times a year at the First Baptist Church.772.567.4341

ATTRACTIONS

BRECONSHIRE WRECK/BOILER WRECK: This 200 foot steel ship sank on a reef during a storm in 1894. She rests in about 20 feet of water, 150 yards east of the Ocean Grill Restaurant in Vero Beach and about 100-300 feet off the beach. At low tide, you can see the boiler and other remains of this iron-screw steamer which is now a popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving.

HALLSTROM FARMSTEAD: This 93-acre conservation area includes the privately owned historic Hallstrom Farmstead and adjacent areas of sand pine scrub, maritime hammock, scrubby flatwoods and bottomland forest Axel Hallstrom, a Swedish horticulturist purchased 40 acres in 1909 and built his home and began a pineapple plantation. The original house and farm structures were built in 1910 and the brick home (referred to as the Hallstrom Home) was built in 1918. The Conservation Area is composed of globally imperiled species such as sand pine scrub, the Florida Scrub Jay and the Gopher Tortoise. The site also contains a small population of Lakela's Mint, a federally and state listed endangered species only found in St Lucie and Indian River County.

HARBOR BRANCH OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION, INC, (HBOI) is one of the world’s leading not-for-profit oceanographic research organizations dedicated to exploring the earth’s oceans, estuaries and coastal regions. Its seven divisions include: Aquaculture; Biomedical Marine Research; Engineering R&D; Environmental Laboratory; Marine Operations; Marine Science; and Marine Mammal Research and Conservation. MANATEE OBSERVATION AND EDUCATION CENTER: Located in historic downtown Fort Pierce, this nature center is home to exhibits and marine life. PAUL KROEGEL STATUE: The Pelican Island Refuge was established by President Theodore Roosevelt on March 14, 1903 as the first national wildlife refuge in the United States, and Captain Paul Kroegel was appointed the first warden.

UDT NAVY SEAL MUSEUM: The Navy SEALS are a rich military tradition, known for their heroic feats in the line of duty. Learn more about how they trained for aquatic military action along the Treasure Coast shoreline. South on A1A to 3300 AlA, Fort Pierce 772.595.5845.

VERO HERITAGE, inc.: During the 1940’s the Heritage Center was the site of a service center for locally stationed enlisted men. Vero Heritage, Inc. a non-profit organization operates the Heritage Center, a landmark building listed in the National Register of Historic Places. ECO-TOURISM


ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING CENTER offers a hands-on approach to investigating the environment with walks through a mangrove forest butterfly garden, wet labs and more. Open Tues.-Fri. 10—4, Sat 9—noon and Sun. 1—4. Guided nature walks on the first and third Saturday. MCKEE BOTANICAL GARDEN: Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, McKee Botanical Garden is an 18-acre subtropical garden offering a diverse botanical collection as well as several restored architectural treasures. POWER PLANT VIEWING AREA: A good place to view manatees and other wildlife during the winter months is at the Vero Beach Municipal Power Plant Located on Indian River Blvd., near the 17th Street Bridge.

 

FISHING

BLUE CYPRESS LAKE: Freshwater bass, bream and bluegill. State Road 60 west  to the western edge of Indian River County.

SEBASTIAN INLET JETTY: Redflsh, snook (which must  be released), flounder, bluefish.             I

STICK MARSH/FARM 13: The best  freshwater action in all of Florida for big bass. Take 512 West through Fellsmere, past the bend in the road.

SURF FISHING: is available on all county shores, except in swimming areas protected by lifeguards at the public beaches.

ROUND ISLAND: Big trout and redfish. State Road A-1-A at the county line.

WABASSO CAUSEWAY: Redfish and spotted sea trout action on the surrounding grass flats. CF 510 where the Causeway crosses the Indian River Lagoon.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY MAIN LIBRARY collection includes over 270,000 items including books, magazines, newspapers, microfilm, CDs, books on tape, DVDs, video tapes and more. THE MARIAN FELL LIBRARY in Fellsmere is a historical landmark reminiscent of a simpler past. Started in 1914, it is named after the daughter of E. Nelson Fell, the founder of Fellsmere. MUSEUMS

SKATING

THE CITY OF SEBASTIAN SKATE FACILITY, owned and operated by the City of Sebastian, has a 7,700 sq. ft. street course skating area. Only skateboards, in-line skates and quad skates can be used. TENNIS


THE RIVERSIDE RACQUET COMPLEX, affiliated with the Recreation Department features ten hard courts (6 lighted), two enclosed and lighted racquetball courts, a lighted practice wall and a pro shop. ARCHIE CARR NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE: America’s first sea turtle refuge is located on the barrier island, north of the Wabasso Causeway. Established in 1989, the refuge offers hope for saving one of the most important turtle nesting sites in the world. 772.562.3909

BARBER STREET SPORTS COMPLEX: Barber Street and Tulip Drive has a children’s creative playground, a multi-purpose field and restrooms.

DONALD MACDONALD/DALE WIMBROW PARK: County Road 505, two miles south of US i in Roseland, has a boat ramp, camping, rest­rooms, and playground. 772.589.0087

WABASSO CAUSEWAY PARK: County Rte 510 at the Wabasso Bridge has a boat ramp, fishing pier, restrooms, picnic tables and grills.

The T.M. GOODWIN WATERFOWL MANAGEMENT AREA was purchased with the assistance of Ducks Unlimited and provides a study area for ducks and other species in a marsh impoundment area. A wildlife tower is located on the grounds, and it’s listed as one of the stops on the Great Florida Birding Trail. Located by the Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area, by the Stick Marsh boat ramp. KIWANIS-HOBART PARK: 58th Avenue and 77th Street has two multi-purpose ball fields, volleyball courts, a soccer field, picnic tables and grills, a children’s playground and restrooms. 772.581.4996

PELICAN ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE: This historical landmark protects thousands of pelicans and other wading birds. The Jungle Trail observation area is located on Jungle Trail, off North A-1-A. 772.362.3909, ext. 275

RIVERVIEW PARK: Intersection of CR 512 and U.S. Highway 1 has picnic tables, grills, benches, walking paths, a playground and volleyball court and a pavilion.

SAINT SEBASTIAN RIVER PRESERVE STATE PARK, North entrance is on CR 507 just north of the C-54 canal, Fellsmere. South Entrance is on CR 512, just west of CR 510 and Sebastian River Middle School. The 22,000 acre preserve offers 40 miles of hiking, biking and horseback, riding trails, primitive camping and fishing. 321.953.3004

COUNTY PARKS

BLUE CYPRESS LAKE PARK: Located 28 miles west of Vero Beach and approximately 4 miles north of State Road 60 on Blue Cypress Road, is famous for excellent freshwater fishing and the beautiful cypress which surrounds the shore. You can rent boats and purchase bait and restrooms, water, and picnic areas are available.

OSLO RIVERFRONT CONSERVATION AREA: Oslo Road east of U.S. 1 has 65 acres of uplands and 230 acres of wetlands with wooded nature trails, observation towers and kayak/canoe docks. 771.589.9223

ROUND ISLAND BEACH PARK: South A­1-A, (just before the St Lucie County border) has restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic areas with grills and a playground. There’s also a boat launch on the river side. 772.231.2604
